In Earnest Hemingway`s short story, “The Short Happy Life ofFrancis Macomber”, the author indirectly describes Margot as the character whois being ironic towards her husband. She intentionally asks question to herhusband, who wants to evade her question, and insults Macomber whenever she hasa chance. For instance, “It`s that damned roaring,’ he said. ‘It`s been goingon all night, you know.’ ‘Why didn`t you wake me?’ she said. ‘I`d love to hearit.” (5b). This quote apparently shows that Margot is trying to humiliate herhusband by ironically tells him that even herself, who is a woman, is notafraid of lion and behave very bravely, while Francis seems to being dread oflion. For another instance, “You`ll kill him marvelously.” She said. “I knowyou will. I`m awfully anxious to see it.” (5b). Margot`s speech seems quite cheerfuland encouraging. However, since she knows that how Francis is afraid of lion, readers can easily guess that Margot never thinks her husband would successfullyhunt lion, and she humiliates him by being sarcastic. Therefore, Margot revealsherself to be an ironical character by being sarcastic and humiliates herhusband. o:p>/o:p>
