당신의 삶에서 할 일이 너무 많아졌을 때, 하루 24시간이 모자라다고 느낄 때,
마요네즈 병 이야기를 떠올려 보아라.
A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him.
한 교수가 그의 철학 수업 시작 전에 앞에 서 있었고 그의 앞에는 몇 가지 물건이 있었다.
When the class began, wordlessly, he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls.
수업이 시작되었을 때 말없이 그는 매우 큰 빈 마요네즈 병을 들어올렸고 그 안을 골프공으로 채우기 시작했다.
He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.
그리고 그는 그의 학생들에게 이 병이 꽉 차있는지 물었다. 학생들은 그렇다고 대답했다.
The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly.
그러자 그 교수는 조약돌 한 상자를 들어 그 병 안에 쏟았다. 교수는 가볍게 그 병을 흔들었다.
The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls.
조약돌은 골프공 사이의 공간으로 굴러 들어 갔다.
He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.
그리고 그는 다시 학생들에게 이 병이 가득 차있는지 물었다. 학생들은 그렇다고 대답했다.
The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar.
그 교수는 다음으로 모래 한 상자를 들어 그 병 안에 쏟아 부었다.
Of course, the sand filled up everything else.
역시 모래는 빈 공간을 채웠다.
He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with an emphatic "yes."
그는 다시 한 번 이 병이 가득 차 있는지 물었다. 학생들은 단호하게 "네"라고 대답했다.
The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the taable and poured the entire contents into the jar, effectively filling the empty space between the sand.
그러자 교수는 교탁 아래에서 두 잔의 커피를 꺼내 그 내용물을 병 안에
모두 쏟아 넣었고, 커피는 모래 사이의 빈 공간을 효과적으로 채웠다.
The students laughed.
학생들은 웃기 시작했다.
“Now," said the professor, as the laughter subsided,
"이제," 웃음이 가라앉자 교수가 말했다.
"I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life.
The golf balls are the important things.
Your family, your children, your faith, your health,
your friends, and your favourite passions.
Things that if everything else was lost and only they remained,
your life would still be full.
The pebbles are the other things that matter.
Your job, your house, and your car.
The sand is everything else. The small stuff.”
"나는 자네들이 이 병이 자네들의 인생임을 알았으면 하네.
골프 공은 매우 중요한 것들이야.
자네들의 가족, 자녀, 자네들의 믿음, 건강, 친구 그리고
자네들이 가장 좋아하는 열정 말이네.
자네들 인생에서 다른 것들이 모두 사라지고 이것들만 남는다해도,
그 인생은 여전히 꽉 차있을 거야.
조약돌은 문제가 되는 다른 것들이네.
자네들의 직업, 집 그리고 차 같은 것들이지.
모래는 그 외 모든 것들이지. 작은 것들 말이야."
"If you put the sand into the jar first," he continued,
"만약 자네들이 모래를 병 속에 가장 먼저 넣는다면," 그는 계속해서 말했다.
"there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls.
The same goes for life.
If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff,
you will never have room for the things that are important to you.
Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness.
Play with your children. Go Fishing, Take time to get medical checkups.
Take your partner out to dinner. Play another 18.
There will always be time to clean the house and fix the disposal.
Take care of the golf balls first, the things that really matter.
Set your priorities.
The rest is just sand."
"그렇다면 조약돌이나 골프공이 들어갈 자리는 없을거네. 인생도 이와 같네.
자네들이 자네들의 시간과 힘을 그 작은 것들을 위해 써버리면,
평생 자네들에게 중요한 것이 들어갈 공간이 없을게야.
자네들의 행복을 결정짓는 것에 집중하게. 아이들과 시간을 보내게.
낚시를 가도 좋고, 건강검진을 위한 시간도 갖게.
배우자와 함께 저녁을 먹으러 나가게. 다른 (골프)경기를 하게.
언제나 집을 치우고 고장난 것을 고칠 시간은 있을거네.
가장 중요한 골프공을 먼저 생각하게. 삶의 우선순위를 정하게.
그리고 남은 것들은 그냥 모래일 뿐이네."
One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the coffee
represented.
The professor smiled.
학생 중 한 명이 손을 들고 커피는 무엇을 의미하는지 물었다.
교수는 미소를 지었다.
"I'm glad you asked.
It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem,
there's always room for a couple of cups of coffee with a friend."
"물어봐줘서 고맙네. 이건 단지 자네들의 인생이 얼마나 가득찼든지 간에,
언제나 친구와 커피 한 잔 할 여유는 있다는 것을 보여주네."
