After years of struggle, he finally landed a role in the film The Last Castle. This film was popular with critics and seemed to mark the successful beginning of Ruffalo’s acting career. However, in 2001, just as his first child was about to be born, Ruffalo discovered he had a brain tumor and had to undergo life-saving surgery. The difficult and dangerous surgery resulted in a period of facial paralysis. It also made him deaf in his left ear.
