SCIENTISTS dissolved two dead pigs in acid to simulate what may have happened to a woman whose husband is accused of her murder.
IT takes about a week to dissolve a 50kg pig in 70 litres of acid, a police officer told a murder committal hearing yesterday.
Klaus Andres, 69, is accused of killing his wife, Li Ping Cao, 42, on or about October 30, 2011 in Cairns.
Police allege he used 60 litres of acid, bought with her bank card, to dissolve her body.
Cairns Magistrates' Court has heard a half-full 20-litre container of acid was found at the couple's house in Brinsmead, and her false teeth and other biological matter was found in a drain.
Under cross-examination, forensic analyst Sgt Lesley Walker said two pigs had been put in separate bins with acid to determine if it was possible to dissolve a body in the same way.
Cairns woman Li Ping Cao, 42, who was allegedly murdered.
The acid in one bin was stirred, the other was not.
"With the bin that was stirred, there was almost complete reduction of the pig and we only recovered about 300g of biological material," she said.
Alex Forrest, an associate professor at Griffith University's School of Biomolecular and Physical Sciences, compared Ms Cao's teeth with other prosthetic teeth dunked in acid. They were similar, but not identical, he told the court.
A Thai woman, Saranrat Kongrat, said through an interpreter that she had become close to Mr Andres, who had spoken to her about getting engaged.
She had not known he was already married, she said.
The hearing also heard that, Mr Andres allegedly expressed a desire to marry another woman before his wife went missing and a neighbour claims she heard the Cairns man arguing with his spouse up to twice a week, the Cairns Post reports.
During the hearing he was warned not to interact with witnesses when he exchanged a look with Thai woman Saranrat Kongrat as she walked past him in the dock after giving evidence about their relationship in the lead-up to Ms Cao's disappearance.
Through an interpreter, she gave conflicting accounts as to whether Andres told her he was married.
But Ms Kongrat said he had mentioned wanting to marry her during phone conversations between them while she was in Thailand.
Neighbour Sharon Evans said she heard Andres and Ms Cao arguing frequently.
"It was possibly even once a week, it could have been twice a week," she said.
Another neighbour, Carol Miller, said that she heard screams prior to Halloween in 2011.
"I remember waking up to a few screams and the screams became controlled, quieter and then stopped," she said.
"I just remember waking up and thinking it sounded like an Asian woman screaming."
The hearing was set to finish on Friday.
